Claudette Fette and Rebecca Estes have published an article about these studies in Occupational Therapy in Mental Health Journal in the January-March 2009 issue. The link to the full article is:
The purpose of the Family Community Access study was to determine:
How families raising children with mental health needs participate in their community.
What families would like to be doing.
Barriers to community participation.
Supports that enable participation.
The study used a survey instrument, the Family Community Access Survey, which was first piloted with 3 family to family advocates who both have children with mental health needs and are advocates for other children and families.
Fifty-one families, representing 110 children responded from across Texas with seventeen surveys received from the Dallas/Ft Worth/Denton metroplex, fifteen from the Houston metroplex, eight from a moderate sized community in North Texas, five from across central Texas and four rural respondents. In addition to the statewide report, individual reports detailing the DFWD, Houston and North Texas groups were also written to provide those areas with information specific to them.
